Jowls & Sagging Skin
A jawline that softened and a neck that followed.
Jowls are the soft fullness that forms along the jawline as the cheek fat pads drift lower and the skin over them loses firmness. Crepey texture through the cheek and a softer angle between jaw and neck usually arrive with them. What helps depends on whether the change sits in the skin, in the structure underneath, or in both.

CONCERN & CAUSES
Why Skin Loosens
Loose skin usually has more than one cause. Collagen and elastin loss, sun damage, descent of the cheek fat pads and volume loss each produce a different pattern, and the main cause decides which treatment helps.
01
Skin That Stopped Springing Back
Collagen holds skin firm. Elastin is what lets it flatten back down after you smile or sleep on one side, and elastin does not regenerate the way collagen does. Once that spring goes, the skin over the cheek and upper neck starts to read as crepey.
02
Structural Descent
The fat pads that once sat high in the cheek drift lower with time and gravity. Their weight then sits over the jawline, which is why sagging jowls appear and the angle between jaw and neck goes soft.
03
Sun and Weight Change
Ultraviolet exposure breaks elastin down faster than age alone would, so skin loses its spring years early. Weight that goes up and down repeatedly stretches it past the point where it fully recovers.
04
Volume Loss With Laxity
When the midface deflates, the skin above it has less to hold onto and starts to drape. If hollowing is what is leading, tightening alone will disappoint you and support has to come first.
Treatment Benefits
Tightening Protocols for Skin Quality or Lost Structure
Tightening works when the treatment matches the tissue. Catherine Curtin, MSN, FNP-C, has nearly 20 years in aesthetic medicine. At your consultation she examines the skin along the cheek, jawline and neck and checks how much of your laxity comes from skin quality and how much from lost structure underneath, then treats the main cause first.

RF Microneedling
Heat travels down the needle channels into the dermis, at a depth chosen for your skin. Your own repair response does the rest.
Keeping What You Build After Treatment
New collagen builds gradually over the months after a series, so the firming you see keeps improving between visits. Your skin carries on aging at its own pace either way, which is why daily sun protection and a steady routine matter as much as the appointments.

Recommended Skincare Support
A Firming Serum
A firming serum supports skin that has started to feel soft or crepey, working at the surface while the tightening treatments work deeper. SkinBetter Science is stocked in Bronxville and Bridgehampton, so the routine at home carries on doing its part between visits.

FAQ
Common Questions About
Skin Tightening
Within a range, yes. Treatments that reach the dermis can build new collagen and give visible firming for mild to moderate jowls and skin laxity. Past that range, surgery does more. At your consultation Catherine recommends a device and number of sessions, or surgery, before you book a series.
For early sagging jowls the usual start is Vivace RF microneedling to firm crepey skin, then carefully placed dermal filler or Sculptra for support through the midface or along the jawline when the structure needs it. Which comes first depends on whether skin quality or lost volume is driving the change, and that call is made in person.
Months, once a full series is complete, and the change arrives gradually along the way. Your skin carries on aging at its own pace, so periodic maintenance is advised for anyone who wants to keep jowls and laxity softer over the long run. Realistic timelines are given at your visit.
A series, almost always. Vivace RF microneedling builds firmness one layer at a time, so the number of visits is set by how your skin responds and confirmed with you in person. If filler or other work belongs in the plan, the whole sequence is mapped up front.
Some, yes. After Vivace RF microneedling expect redness and fine pinpoint marks, which fade over the following few days. If tightening is paired with injectables there can be mild swelling at the treated points. Recovery is reviewed with you before you book, so you can plan around work and anything social.
Tightening and injectables are planned as a sequence, with the order and spacing set at your consultation. Where crepey skin is the main problem, a Vivace series usually comes first, and filler or Sculptra follows once the firming can be measured. Where the structure underneath has gone, that support is placed first and tightening is reviewed at a follow-up visit.
It depends on what the plan includes. Vivace RF microneedling is $900 per session, or three sessions for $2,500. Dermal filler runs $750 to $900 per syringe and Sculptra is $850 per vial. Your consultation is complimentary and there is no deposit, and the full plan is priced before you book.
When there is a lot of loose skin, or a neck that hangs, energy-based work has its limits and surgery may suit better. Catherine examines your neck and jowls at the consultation, so you start a series with a clear expectation of the result.
Non-surgical tightening works by prompting your own collagen to rebuild, so the firming appears gradually over weeks and months. The jawline looks more defined and the skin feels firmer, while your expression and the shape of your face stay your own.
Rarely. Vivace works within the skin, so a small area of active acne or infection means treating around it or waiting. Treatment is also held off if you are pregnant. Beyond that, the real limit is how much laxity there is, which is assessed before a series begins.
For mild to moderate laxity, RF microneedling warms the deeper layers of neck skin and prompts new collagen, which firms the area slowly over a series. Neck skin is thinner than facial skin, so the work is more conservative there. When the neck is very loose, you are told that tightening cannot reach it.
The area is numbed first and given time to take effect. You feel pressure as the needles set and warmth as the radiofrequency goes in. Afterward the skin is flushed and warm for a few hours, similar to a sunburn without the sting, and the fine marks fade over the next few days.
If your skin still has some natural stretch left, crepey texture after weight loss can respond to collagen-building treatment over a series. Where a lot of skin is hanging, energy-based tightening has a ceiling. Where that ceiling sits for your skin is explained before you commit to anything.
