Botox vs Dysport, from a trainer’s chair

The two most-compared injectables in the country, and the gap between them is narrower than the internet suggests. Here is how Dysport vs Botox compares, and what decides how your result looks.

Same idea, small differences

Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA, Dysport is abobotulinumtoxinA, and both are purified botulinum toxin type A. Each one relaxes the muscle that folds your skin into a line every time you squint or frown, and both hold FDA approval for the frown lines between the brows. Most people who have done well on one do well on the other.

Where they part ways is in the detail. One starts sooner. One stays nearer the point of entry. What decides between them on a given face is the muscle itself: how broad the area is, and whether it sits braced at rest or only pulls when you ask it to.

How they compare

Botox and Dysport are the pair most people are choosing between. Daxxify belongs to the same family and sits in the table for reference. Onset and spread separate them, and the muscle decides which one is used.

A Dysport unit is not a Botox unit. It takes two to three Dysport units to do the work of one Botox unit, so a higher count does not mean more product went in. Neuromodulators are $15.50 a unit, and Beauty Bank members pay less (see the Beauty Bank page). Your count is confirmed at your complimentary consultation, and there is no deposit. Frown lines are the approval they share; the rest is off-label, and that is stated up front.

What to expect after either one

They act on muscle the same way, so the day or two afterward feels much the same with either one. There may be a pinpoint of redness where the needle went in, and some mild swelling that passes quickly. A light headache happens now and then.

Occasionally product reaches a neighboring muscle and a brow feels heavy for a few weeks. It eases as the effect wears down, and a conservative dose placed with care makes that unlikely to begin with. Serious reactions are uncommon. Pregnancy and nursing are reasons to wait, as is a neuromuscular condition, and your full health history comes first for that reason.

The injector matters more than the brand

Neither product makes a result look natural on its own. Placement and dose do that. The brand is a small decision sitting inside a larger one about how much movement to leave you.

Catherine has nearly 20 years injecting, and she taught injectable technique to physicians, dentists and nurse practitioners for the Allergan Medical Institute. She examines how the area moves and how much tension it holds at rest, then doses conservatively so your expression stays yours.

Not sure which you need?

You do not have to decide Dysport vs Botox on your own. At your complimentary consultation in Bronxville or Bridgehampton, Catherine examines your facial movement and recommends the product and dose that suit the area. There is no deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dysport any better than Botox?+

Neither one wins on its own. Both are botulinum toxin type A. Dysport's wider drift can suit a broad forehead, where a little spread is welcome. Botox holds its ground around the small, defined muscles at the outer eye and the lip. The one that suits the area being treated is the better one that day.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?+

Onset, spread and the unit scale. Dysport often softens within the first few days, while Botox usually builds over the first week and stays nearer where it was placed. The units are not interchangeable, so a Dysport count reads higher for the same area. Frown lines between the brows are the one approval they share.

Does Dysport last longer than Botox?+

About the same, for most people. How long a result holds tracks your metabolism and the muscle group treated far more than the label on the product. What you had and how long it lasted is noted, so the next visit is planned from your own history.

Which one do you use at Beauty and Fly?+

All three. Botox, Dysport and Daxxify are stocked at Beauty and Fly, and the choice is made at your visit from the pull of the muscle and the breadth of the area. A light first dose means the same thing in either product: less than the muscle could take, with the option to add at your follow-up.

Can I switch from Botox to Dysport, or the other way?+

Yes. They work along the same lines, so moving between them is straightforward for most people. If one seemed to fade sooner than you wanted, or one area never quite softened, tell Catherine at your appointment. The product, the dose, or the injection pattern is adjusted from there.

What are the side effects of Botox and Dysport?+

They behave alike here, and most of what happens is mild and short-lived. A small bruise or some swelling usually fades within a day or two. Rarely, one side of the forehead sits lower than the other until the effect wears down. If you bruise easily, tell Catherine at the start, because it changes how deep each injection is placed and how many points are used.
