What Are Sculptra & Radiesse?

Sculptra and Radiesse are injectable biostimulators. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, which is reconstituted in advance so it is ready at the appointment. Radiesse is calcium hydroxylapatite, diluted far beyond the concentration used as a filler so it disperses through the tissue. Neither one adds volume on the day the way hyaluronic acid filler does. Both prompt the skin to make its own collagen where support has gone, and that collagen is what produces the change, which is why the difference appears over months. Firmness builds in the dermis for weeks before it shows in a photograph. In Galderma's trials, Sculptra Aesthetic patients were followed for two full years once their series was complete.

Sculptra & Radiesse at Beauty and Fly

Sculptra and hyperdilute Radiesse are injected by Catherine Curtin, MSN, FNP-C, and both the Bronxville and Bridgehampton offices offer them. A first session is deliberately conservative. The area is examined again about three months later, once collagen has had time to form, and what comes next is decided from what the skin produced.

Are Sculptra & Radiesse Right for You?

  • Sculptra and hyperdilute Radiesse suit adults whose concern is lost support and skin quality: a cheek that has flattened, a jaw border that has gone soft, or skin along the lower face that has lost its recoil.

  • Treated areas include the cheeks and mid-face, the jaw border and early jowls, the marionette lines and chin, crepey cheek skin, and the neck and chest. Jawline, neck and chest placement is off-label, as is hyperdiluting Radiesse.

  • Medical history and current medications are reviewed at the consultation before any product is injected. Collagen cannot be dissolved once it forms, so an area that has only begun to look as though support is gone is examined again before it is treated.

Little changes on the day of treatment. New collagen begins forming in the weeks after a session, the area feels firmer to the touch before it looks different, and the change continues building from about month three onward. Rebuilt collagen along the jaw border firms a softened edge, and deep placement in the cheek restores the upward curve. Where skin is crepey, a fine dermal grid thickens the dermis so the crinkled texture reads smoother. Most people drive home afterward and carry on with the day. Lost support and surface lines are different problems. Catherine examines fat-pad position, bone support along the jaw and how thin the skin is over each area, and that examination decides whether a biostimulator is the right treatment for you at all.

Depth and spacing govern a biostimulator. Placed too shallow or too close together, product can form a firm nodule months later. Catherine injects into the deeper plane and spaces each pass wide.

Where support has been lost, Catherine works in the deep framework under your skin and layers along the cheek and jaw in stages, stepping back between passes to check balance across the whole face. Crepey skin is the exception, and there a fine dermal grid thickens the skin itself.

Radiesse is calcium hydroxylapatite, thinned well past filler strength so it spreads through tissue and thickens the skin. The two are sometimes combined in one plan, depending on which areas are being treated.

No. Hyaluronic acid filler can be removed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Sculptra and Radiesse work differently: what builds is your own collagen, and there is no enzyme that dissolves collagen. That is why product is added in stages, with the area examined again before more is placed.

Most patients feel pressure more than anything sharp. The product goes in as small threads or droplets across the treated area, with a check of the result between passes. Any fullness you see in the mirror afterward is the fluid carrying the product, and it leaves within a few days.

Mild swelling or tenderness for a few days is normal, and a small bruise along the jaw is possible. What is not normal is a firm lump surfacing weeks or months later. Correct depth and wide spacing are what guard against it, and if you feel one, let Catherine know and she will look at it.

New collagen keeps forming for months after a session, and collagen cannot be dissolved the way hyaluronic acid filler can. For that reason less is placed at the first visit than the area could take, and more is added at a follow-up visit, after the new collagen has formed.

Botox relaxes the muscles that crease skin. Fillers such as Restylane or the RHA collection add volume the same day. Sculptra and hyperdilute Radiesse do neither: they ask your skin to make collagen, so change appears over months. Catherine uses them when support and skin quality are what is missing.
