Dullness that comes back no matter how much you exfoliate at home. Pigment from old sun or old breakouts that stays put. A chemical peel applies a measured acid solution that loosens and sheds the damaged surface layer, so newer skin reaches the top. Peel depth is chosen for your skin type and concern.

Chemical Peels
01

What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a measured acid solution applied to the skin to loosen the dull, damaged cells sitting on the surface, so newer skin can reach the top. The acids behave differently from one another: salicylic acid is oil soluble and works inside the pore, while mandelic, kojic and lactic acid move pigmented cells off the surface faster than skin manages on its own. Glycolic and stronger acids speed up turnover and can prompt collagen activity underneath. The medical-grade systems used here include VI Peel, PRX, Facteur 5, Linder Health and Toskani, and the depth runs from superficial to light medium. Depth is what decides whether the skin flakes visibly for several days or sheds nothing anyone notices.

Chemical Peels at Beauty and Fly

Peels at the Bronxville and Bridgehampton offices are performed by Catherine Curtin, MSN, FNP-C. Depth is set from your skin history, and where skin holds pigment the starting strength is lower and the visits are spaced wider, stepping up only once she has seen how the skin responded.

03

Are Chemical Peels Right for You?

  • Chemical peels suit adults with dullness, rough texture, congested or acne-prone skin, or pigment left behind by sun and old breakouts. Deeper skin tones start at a lower strength with wider spacing between visits.

  • They address uneven tone and dark spots, clogged pores and active breakouts, fine lines and crepey areas, and a surface that feels rough or looks flat.

  • A fresh sunburn, an active cold sore, broken skin or recent isotretinoin postpones the appointment. Medications, home products and past skin reactions are reviewed at the consultation.

04

What Are the Benefits of Chemical Peels?

Tone evens out, rough texture smooths, and fine lines look softer as turnover picks up again. Salicylic-based peels clear what is clogging the pore, so breakouts come less often across a series. Each peel builds on the one before it, which is why improvement accumulates over the weeks. The lighter systems leave no visible flaking, so most people carry on with their day, and a stronger peel is scheduled for a week with room for several days of shedding. Consultations are complimentary and there is no deposit.

Chemical Peel Treatment Goals

Concerns a Peel Series Can Shift

Acne and Congested Skin

Acne and Congested Skin

Salicylic acid is oil soluble, so it gets down into the pore and loosens what is packed in there. Over a series, breakouts come less often and pores look smaller.

Treatments+

Salicylic-based peels clear oil and buildup out of the pore and calm what is already inflamed, which makes the next breakout less likely to form.

Causes+

Oil and dead cells pack into a pore, bacteria take hold, and the spot swells into a blackhead or a red, tender bump.

Light Peel With No Visible Flaking

Light peel · everyday-friendly

A light peel leaves no visible flaking and no downtime. Clarity keeps building over the next few days as that dry, stacked top layer gradually releases. You can return to work and your usual routine the same day.

Stronger Peel (Several Days of Flaking)

Stronger peel · several days

A stronger chemical peel usually brings visible flaking that begins after the first day and runs on for several. Skin can feel tight and dry while the old layer lets go. Let it release on its own. Picking at it tears the new surface underneath before it is ready.

Series Results Over Time

Series · improvement builds

Each peel starts from where the last one left off, so the improvement builds across a series. Over the following weeks most patients see fine lines reading softer, tone looking more even and a steadier glow as cell turnover speeds up.

How Peel Depth Is Chosen for Your Skin

Depth Set From Skin History

How Peel Depth Is Chosen for Your Skin

Catherine Curtin, MSN, FNP-C, has nearly 20 years of experience in aesthetic medicine. Peel depth is chosen from your skin type, your concern and how your skin reacted to past treatments, within a range that runs from superficial to light medium depth.

Skin that darkened after a burn, a scrape or an old breakout can darken again if an acid works too fast. Catherine asks about that before anything else. A patient with that history gets a lower starting strength and wider spacing than the concern alone would suggest.

Peels here run from superficial to light medium depth. A superficial peel works on the dead cells sitting on the surface, so tone and texture change gradually across a series of visits.

Peel strength is matched to what your skin has tolerated before and to how much flaking you can manage in the days after, with enough space between visits for the surface to recover fully.

Treatment Process

What a Peel Appointment Involves

A peel appointment runs in four stages: assessment, cleansing, acid application and post-peel care. The order matters, because acid absorbs evenly only on skin that has been cleansed of oil.

Step 01 · Consultation

Setting Peel Depth and Shedding Tolerance

Catherine asks which products and treatments your skin has reacted badly to, because a past reaction limits how deep a peel can go. A fresh sunburn, an active cold sore or recent isotretinoin postpones the visit.

  • Skin type, tone and the concern that brought you in
  • Medications, home products and past reactions reviewed

How a Skin Peel in Westchester and the Hamptons Is Planned

One peel does not suit every face. Catherine examines skin thickness, oiliness and any irritation, and reviews your home products, before choosing the peel system and strength.

Peel Depth and Skin Tone

Depth by skin tone

Depth follows what your skin has tolerated before. On deeper skin tones the start is lower and the peels are spaced wider, because an acid pushed too fast can set off the very pigment it was meant to lift.

Peels That Do Not Cost You a Week

Low-flaking options

The menu leans on peel systems that work without visible flaking, so a lighter peel does not cost you a shedding week. When a stronger peel suits your skin, Catherine times it for days with room to flake.

FAQ

The Peel Questions Patients Ask Most

Straight answers to what patients ask about chemical peeling, the shedding week and how a planned series runs.

Yes, with a slower schedule. Skin that holds pigment can darken if an acid is pushed too hard, so Catherine starts at a lower strength, spaces the visits wider, and steps up only after seeing how your skin responded to the first peel.

A series, almost always, because one peel rarely moves pigment or texture far on its own. You get the number of visits and the gaps between them once Catherine has examined your skin in person.

It depends on depth. Light peels often leave nothing visible, while stronger ones bring several days of flaking and dryness. The depth is chosen around the downtime your schedule can carry.

Usually you pause retinoids for several days on either side of the peel. At your consultation Catherine goes through everything in your routine and gives you exact dates to stop and restart.

Yes. Catherine places peels between NOUVAderm laser and microneedling sessions so renewal keeps moving while the skin rests from the heavier treatment. The peel is scheduled once your skin has fully recovered from the previous treatment.

A fresh sunburn, an active cold sore, broken skin or recent isotretinoin all push the appointment back. Peeling skin that is already compromised can leave pigment that takes months to clear, so the visit is rescheduled until the skin is intact and calm.

A measured acid solution applied to loosen the dull, damaged cells sitting on the surface. Glycolic, lactic, mandelic and salicylic each behave differently, and you are told which is going on your face and why.

Your skin keeps turning over, so a single peel fades as new surface cells stack up again. Maintenance peels through the year hold the tone and texture you built during the initial series.

Yes. Salicylic and other targeted peels suit acne-prone skin well, clearing what is clogging the pore and, over a series, lightening the marks that old breakouts left behind.

It depends on which peel system is used, the depth and the length of your appointment. Cost is covered with you after Catherine has examined your skin, so you know the range before you commit to anything.

With the lighter systems, nothing anyone notices. With a stronger peel, fine flaking around the mouth and nose from about day two, tight dry skin for several days, and no picking at any of it.

Catherine performs peels at both offices, in Bronxville and Bridgehampton, by appointment. Book a complimentary consultation and she will decide which peel system your skin should start with.
