What Is PRP Therapy?
PRP therapy, short for platelet-rich plasma, uses a concentrated part of your own blood to prompt repair in tissue that has slowed down. A small sample is taken from the arm, usually about four tablespoons, and spun in a centrifuge for roughly 15 minutes, which separates the platelet layer from the red blood cells. That concentrated plasma is then placed into the face, under the eyes, into acne scarring, or across the scalp. The platelets release growth factors that signal collagen and elastin production to pick back up, so the change comes from your own repair response and builds over the following weeks. Because the plasma comes from your own blood, an allergic reaction is unlikely. Most people have redness for about a day, and now and then a small bruise.
