Microneedling for Hyperpigmentation

  • •Microneedling + PRP
  • •Targets Dark Spots
  • •Evens Tone and Texture
  • •Planned for Deeper Tones

Microneedling with PRP treats hyperpigmentation at the depth where the excess melanin sits. Fine channels are opened through the stained skin to trigger repair, and platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood is worked into those channels to supply the growth factors for that repair. Dark spots lighten toward the tone of the skin beside them over a series of sessions.

01

What Is PRP Microneedling?

Microneedling with PRP puts two steps into one appointment. A microneedling device opens fine channels through the skin, which signals the tissue to repair itself and build new collagen. Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge until the platelets and their growth factors are concentrated, then applied while those channels are still open so it absorbs into the layer where the repair happens. Hyperpigmentation has to be treated at that same layer, because excess melanin is deposited below the depth any cream reaches. As fresher collagen matures beneath a dark mark, the skin coming to the surface carries less of the old staining and the mark blurs into the tone around it.

Microneedling with PRP at Beauty and Fly

Microneedling with PRP at the Bronxville and Bridgehampton offices is performed by Catherine Curtin, MSN, FNP-C. The plasma is drawn and spun in the office, and the needle depth is set from the thickness of your skin and how it has darkened after past breakouts. On skin that darkens easily the depth stays shallow and visits are spaced further apart.

03

Is Microneedling Right for Your Pigment?

  • Microneedling with PRP suits adults whose discoloration sits in the skin as flat brown or purplish marks, including pigment left after breakouts and scattered sun spots across weathered skin.

  • It addresses post-inflammatory marks, mottled tone from years of sun exposure, rough texture sitting alongside the pigment, and mild discoloration in the thin skin under the eyes.

  • Skin that has darkened after a previous treatment is examined at the complimentary consultation, where medical history is reviewed and a chemical peel or a gentler approach may be recommended first.

What Are the Benefits for Uneven Tone?

Uneven tone improves gradually across a course of visits. Overall clarity usually arrives before any individual mark has fully faded, because the needling refines rough texture in the same pass. Pigment left behind by breakouts tends to fade first, while sun spots and mottled areas blend more slowly into the skin beside them. The plasma is made from your own blood, so nothing foreign is introduced. Microneedling is $400 on its own, and $200 to $500 more when it is combined with PRP or another regenerative serum. Consultations are complimentary and there is no deposit.

How Microneedling Helps Hyperpigmentation

Post-Inflammatory Marks

Post-Inflammatory Marks

The flat brown or purplish marks that stay for months after a breakout heals have a name: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The pigment sits in the skin itself, and it fades as that skin repairs and turns over.

Treatments+

Needling goes below the level of the staining, then your PRP is worked into those channels to support the collagen repair and cell turnover that follow. Old marks lift in stages across a sequence of visits.

Causes+

When a breakout or any irritation inflames the skin, pigment cells can over-respond while it heals. Deeper tones do this more readily, and the mark outlasts the spot that caused it by months.

Immediate Response

Treatment day · one visit

One appointment covers the blood draw, the needling and the plasma going back on while the channels are open. Skin is flushed and warm afterward. Mineral sunscreen starts the next morning and sun is avoided while the skin heals, since healing skin takes on pigment more readily than usual.

Skin Begins to Brighten

Early phase · brightness first

The channels close and the growth factors get to work. Skin feels smoother and reads brighter first. Your dark spots are still there, but their edges start to blur into the skin around them, which is the change worth watching for.

When the Staining Finally Lifts

After the sequence · clearer tone

The clearest fading shows in the weeks after the last session. New collagen matures slowly, and the skin that reaches the surface carries less of the old pigment. Old marks look lighter and overall tone looks more even at that point.

Why Pigment Work Needs a Careful Hand

Reading Pigment Before Treating

Why Pigment Work Needs a Careful Hand

Catherine Curtin, MSN, FNP-C, has used PRP and PRFM for about 15 years and treats pigment at both the Bronxville and Bridgehampton offices. Skin that has darkened once after inflammation can darken again, so that history sets the needle depth and the spacing between sessions.

How your skin has pigmented in the past decides the approach. Catherine asks what happened after old breakouts, and whether a previous treatment ever left the skin darker. That answer sets the needle depth and how long the skin is given between sessions.

Any device that wounds skin to clear a dark spot can also provoke a new one. On pigment-prone skin Catherine works shallower than the standard setting and spreads treatment over more visits, so the skin heals fully between sessions without darkening again.

Between sessions, Catherine sets the brightening actives and the mineral SPF you use, from the SkinBetter Science and Noon Aesthetics lines carried here, and adjusts them as your tone changes. Daily sunscreen and steady use of those actives keep the marks that have faded from coming back.

How Your Pigment Treatment Is Set Up

What Shapes Your Result Here

How far your discoloration moves comes down to the quality of the plasma Catherine spins and the depth she chooses for your skin. The appointment is built around both, and visits are spaced by how the pigment behaves between them.

Focused PRP Preparation

Drawn in-clinic

Catherine draws your blood and spins it in a medical centrifuge here in the office. The timing is set so the plasma is ready as the last needling pass finishes and goes onto the skin while the channels are still open.

Set by Your Pigment History

Depth set precisely

Needle depth is set after looking at how thick your skin is and how it has darkened in the past. On skin that pigments easily the depth goes shallower and visits are spaced further apart, because pigment that gets provoked can take months to fade again.

FAQ

Your Questions About Pigment and Needling

The questions patients with dark spots ask most: what needling does to staining already in the skin, and what a full course of it costs.

It works on the layer where the pigment was deposited, which sits below anything a cream reaches. The needles open fine channels through the stained skin and signal it to rebuild, and your platelet-rich plasma goes into those channels so the collagen that forms is better quality. The spot fades as that fresher skin comes up through it.

It works at the depth where the extra melanin is held. The needles signal that skin to rebuild, and your PRP supports healthier collagen and steadier cell turnover while it does. Across a sequence of visits, a dark spot lightens toward the color of the skin beside it.

Yes for many marks, particularly post-acne pigment and some sun damage. It will not erase every mark. Most patients see clearer skin arrive gradually across the series, and daily SPF plus brightening skincare between visits keeps the spots that have faded from darkening again.

Post-inflammatory pigment, the flat marks left after breakouts, tends to answer well. Scattered sun spots and mottled tone soften too, more slowly, and a few older patches barely move. What matters is how your own skin has pigmented before, which is read before any session is scheduled.

It can suit many medium and deeper tones when it is planned for them. Deeper skin makes pigment more readily in response to injury, so before needling is suggested, Catherine asks what your skin did after old breakouts, burns or previous treatments. If that history is a concern, she points you toward a route with less inflammation in it.

Texture and brightness usually shift within a few weeks. Individual dark spots take considerably longer. The meaningful fading of post-acne marks and sun spots tends to land after the full sequence is done, once new collagen has matured. Expectations for your particular pattern are set before you commit to anything.

Skin is pink and warm through the first day, and far less so after that. Sun protection is the most important part of the aftercare for pigment, because healing skin darkens under UV far more readily than usual. Mineral SPF from the morning after, and your aftercare goes home with you in writing.

It can, if the skin is pushed too hard. Any injury to skin that pigments easily risks darkening it further, and that risk is exactly what is checked at your consultation. On skin with that history the depth stays low and more healing time is left between visits. Daily mineral SPF is required.

Often. Chemical peels, NOUVAderm laser and microneedling with PRP all have a place in a pigment plan, and part of the consultation is deciding the order and the spacing between them. Catherine tells you how much healing time each step needs, so the course fits your schedule.

It is priced per session, so the total follows from how many you need. Microneedling is $400 on its own, and $200 to $500 more when combined with PRP or another regenerative serum for pigment work. The number of sessions is confirmed at your consultation and the full figure is given before you book. The consultation is complimentary and there is no deposit.

Catherine examines your skin at the consultation, maps where the pigment sits, and reviews how it behaved after past breakouts and past treatments. She compares microneedling with PRP against chemical peels and the NOUVAderm laser for your pattern of discoloration, then recommends one and explains how much fading to expect.
