What causes hyperpigmentation?
There are numerous factors that can cause, contribute to, or exacerbate hyperpigmentation — which comes in many forms, like melasma, age spots, and others. Some of the most common causes of hyperpigmentation or an uneven skin tone include:
- Sun exposure
- Hormone fluctuation, like that occurring during pregnancy
- Genetics
- Age
- Certain conditions
How can hyperpigmentation be corrected?
While concealer or makeup may be used to temporarily cover dark patches and create the illusion of a more even skin tone, many patients prefer a more reliable, longer-lasting, convenient alternative. For these men and women, I may recommend microneedling plus PRP, which can help to correct the skin’s tone and texture from the inside out for a dramatic, lasting improvement in the patient’s overall complexion.
How does microneedling plus PRP work?
Microneedling plus PRP is a nonsurgical aesthetic treatment that relies on the science behind microneedling combined with the growth factors found in the patient’s own blood to boost cell regeneration, encourage collagen production, and trigger other healing responses with the goal of enhancing various aspects of the skin’s health and appearance. At the beginning of your treatment session, a small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm. The blood is then spun in a specialized piece of lab equipment known as a centrifuge, which separates the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from other components of the blood.
While this is taking place, I will perform the microneedling treatment, which involves rolling a handpiece containing a series of tiny needles across the skin’s surface, creating micro-injuries that stimulate natural healing processes. At the conclusion of the treatment, the prepared PRP serum will be applied to the skin’s surface and allowed to infuse deep through the micro-injuries, where it will subsequently work to promote the production of new, healthy collagen. This combination of healing and regenerative responses can help to dramatically improve the appearance of many forms of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone, including dark spots, age spots, sun damage, redness, melasma, and others.
What else does microneedling plus PRP help with?
While many men and women turn to microneedling plus PRP for hyperpigmentation, this exciting treatment offers additional benefits for addressing a wide variety of common skin irregularities, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Rough skin texture
- Scars
- Acne
- Brown spots
- Hyperpigmentation
